Recently I have been asked "What have you done for the City?" and I think it's a fair and great question. This a question that I am pleased to answer. Below I will expand upon the work I have done throughout my life as a community leader.
2015- I implemented FREE American Sign Language classes and Mommy and me classes countywide. The city of Sunrise was one of the first cities to get the American Sign Language mommy and me program in the Dan Pearl Library.
2015- Present- I have helped countless Veterans in the city of Sunrise start their own companies, companies that have flourished and stayed within the city.
2015- Opened South Florida's First and Only Deaf Community Center.
2016- Present- I have worked within the LGBTQI++ communities, by ways of providing their communities members with education regarding the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Blind, community that is within the LGBTQI++ In addition I have volunteered countless hours to working with individuals in the transgendered community and providing Pro Bono Interpreting services (Pride Center and Imperial Sun Court of All Florida).
2017- I have been recognized by the Kiwanis club for my work within the community, and recognized for my ability to advocate for equitability and fairness with the Passion for the People award and the Community Advocate of the Year of Award.
In 2018 I was the originator of a Florida Law called the "Tex-to-911" Bill. This Florida Law positively impacts 22.2 million Floridians, including every single Sunrise Resident.
2022 I advocated for Sign Language Interpreters at every city of Sunrise Commissions meeting along with at every large-scale event, that request was granted that same evening. On a separate day, I advocated for the Interpreters to be framed for individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and who also have low vision and that request was instantaneously granted that same evening. It's notable to mention that the City of Sunrise is the ONLY city in Broward County that provides equal access to communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
2022 I advocated on behalf of Sunrise Veterans and inquired at a commissions meeting as to when our Veterans park would be opened.
2022 I advocated for Rourke Pool to remain open for an extended period for the residents to have more time to acclimate and enjoy the new amenities.
2022 I advocated for P.A.L (Police and Law Enforcement) to be brought into to the city of Sunrise, which I mapped out and created programming for.
2022 I wrote recommendation letters for the City of Sunrise Police Department, to help them ascertain grant funding to allow them to serve Sunrise residents who have special needs in life-threatening emergencies.
I feel that it's essential you know the work I have done and continue to do for the community. It's important for you to know, that I have worked for you, long before you may have known my name, and I will continue to do so.
I stand for everyone in my community, regardless of gender, background, race, religion, creed, or sexual orientation. If you have breath in your lungs, I stand alongside you, united. Because I am of the people, and that means I will always be for the people.
I look forward to being your next Sunrise City Commissioner Seat D.
This November 8, 2022.
